Cheney Lost

vote

In the Republican House primary in Wyoming on Aug 16, U.S. Representative Liz Cheney, a prominent Trump critic, lost to Harriet Hageman, a Trump-backed opponent, by about 37 percentage point. Cheney called Hageman to concede. During the concession speech, Cheney stated that winning “would have required that I go along with President Trump’s lie about the 2020 election.” Cheney suggested that the survival of the country should not be taken for granted because “poisonous lies destroy free nations”. Cheney vowed to do all in her power to prevent Donald Trump from winning the White House, possibly by running for president herself.

Ousting Cheney is a major victory for Trump’s effort in unseating Republicans who supported his impeachment after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol building last year. Four out of the ten house republicans who impeached Trump have lost in primary elections. Another four have retired.

Why it matters: It is a clear sign that Trump is still a very dominant force in the Republican Party.
