30% of the food supply in the world, such as apples, coffee, and berries, depends on bees which play an important role in pollination. However, more than 35% bees die of diseases, pesticides, climate change, and insufficient care from beekeepers every year. A company called Beewise created a device, Beehome, that holds at least 24 colonies and allows beekeepers to remotely manage the hives. The device has cameras, sensors, and AI-based computer vision to allow 24/7 monitoring. The temperature and humidity are controlled. The robotic arms enabled by precision robotics can feed and prevent swarming. When parasites, such as Varroa, are detected by the device, pesticides are automatically distributed from the robotic arms. When harmful substance is detected from the environment, the device seals itself and notifies the beekeeper. With Beehome, bee death is reduced, pollination and honey production can be doubled, and honey harvesting can be automated.
Summary
Purpose
To manage bee colonies better
Idea
Use robotic arms and automation to feed and distribute pesticides
Further Possibilities
1. Use AI to help track farm animals
2. Use AI to monitor a baby
3. Use AI to monitor a football match
4. Use AI to track the pandemic and alert medical staff
5. Use AI to manage a car, such as services and fueling
Questions
1. What are all the things that need to be managed yet hard to monitor directly?
2. How might we use sensors to monitor all the threats?
3. How might we use AI to track and deal with the pandemic?
