In the United Kingdom, there is about 4.6 million tons of food waste a year, which means on average a person wastes 69 kg. An average family loses hundreds of dollars for food waste yearly. The large amount of food waste also creates environmental challenges, releasing methane and CO2 into the atmosphere. And, this is happening when more than 700 million people are hungry worldwide. There has to be some solutions.
Kitche is a mobile app that allows users to keep track of food. A user can type, use voice, or scan grocery receipts to record the food items she has. All the items can be moved across three categories: To buy, At home, and Ditched. The app sends reminders for food items that are expiring so that users consume them in time. In addition, thousands of recipes are available to match the ingredients a user has. The app also provides cooking tips and a community to share such information. Customers are able to see the amount of money and CO2 saved week by week.
