Putting AI into Reverse Vending Machines

Getting a bottle of soda from a vending machine is quite easy. Reversing that by giving an empty bottle back to a machine is not exactly a new idea. That machine is called Reverse Vending Machine (RVM).

However, there has been many challenges with reverse vending machines. For example, conventional RVMs may not be able to sort cans and bottles. Also, if there is beverage remaining in collected containers, it makes the process rather messy.

Sustaintech, a Thai company, has developed an improved RVM utilizing advanced technologies, including AI visual analytics and weight measurements, to efficiently identify and sort different types of containers like aluminum, glass, and plastic. Weighing ensures there is no remaining beverage in a container. Visual AI can detect broken glass and reject a damaged bottle. Bar code scanning further enhances accuracy and convenience.

By depositing empty containers into the machine, users receive incentives in the form of paper coupons, digital tokens, or the option to donate the amount. This reward system aims to motivate and recognize individuals for their contributions, making recycling a more engaging and beneficial experience.

Strategically located at various busy locations like bars, restaurants, airports, railway stations, and downtown areas, the Reverse Vending Machine encourages widespread participation in recycling efforts. Its automated monitoring system generates reports to track its impact, facilitating efficient management and optimization of the recycling process.

The Reverse Vending Machine represents a practical and effective approach to recycling, streamlining the collection, sorting, and processing of empty beverage containers. Its user-friendly design, coupled with the financial incentives, creates an accessible and appealing opportunity for individuals to actively participate in recycling initiatives and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The idea
Use visual AI

Further Possibilities

1. Put the reverse vending machine in sports stadiums
2. Have reverse vending machines for batteries
3. Have built-in pipes in a building for transferring recyclable materials
4. Combine a reverse vending machine with a regular vending machine so that people get snacks for depositing bottles
5. Add a 3D printer to use the recycled materials to develop art

Questions

1. What might be all the things we can collect through reverse vending machines?
2. What other incentives can encourage people to recycle?
3. How might we ship recycled materials directly to recycling facilities?
